FOUNDERS
M&R Development is led by two sets of brothers with lifelong roots in Maine—the Michauds and the Risbaras. With decades of experience in real estate, construction, and business leadership, they built the company on a shared commitment to thoughtful development and strong community relationships. Today, that foundation continues as the next generation becomes actively involved across the M&R companies. Integrity, honesty, and transparency remain the guiding principles behind every project we pursue.
The Michaud family built a long-running career in the corporate world through a homegrown business that started in their garage. What humbly began as a single truck distribution company attracted regional success and, later, a multibillion-dollar investment. The Michauds carried on in corporate leadership roles with a focus on strategy, growth, and long-term performance.
The Risbaras bring more than 50 years of hands-on construction experience through their family-owned company based in Scarborough, which has played a significant role in shaping Southern Maine’s built environment. Now in its third generation of leadership, the fourth is living in Scarborough and will soon be called upon to start picking up trash on the jobsites to build a work ethic and immerse them in the family business.

In 2014, these two families came together to form M&R Development. Combining business leadership and construction expertise, the team shares a belief in community building and place making. The formula for their success has been simple – match community goals with market demand and let the municipality’s comprehensive plan guide development. With that approach, M&R has delivered nearly a dozen thoughtful projects that benefit regions both socially and economically, including its legacy project, The Downs in Scarborough.

Together, their experience and shared values continue to guide M&R’s vision, culture, and approach to development.
